A  Message from Mr. McCullum, Principal at the Discovery Center

Principal Asa McCullum

Hello and welcome to our CSE families and community. We at the Discovery Center are excited to work with your student as they embark on the middle years. Middle school is that atypical time when kids begin the important transition from adolescent thoughts, feelings, and actions into their adult aptitudes and habits. It's critical during this stage to introduce the learning skills and work capacity needed for high school and beyond. The Discovery Center staff is dedicated to challenging our students with a rigorous curriculum. Our courses focus on the core context areas of Math, English Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies, but we also recognize the need to develop the whole person. We teach skills such as using self-control, responding to failure, dealing with group pressure, setting a goal, and concentrating on a task in our Personal Development class.

Our theme this year is "The Old West." Here in the west we want to instill in each student the positive values of an educated citizen. We will follow the cowboy code of the "golden rule," honor, celebrating diversity, and sense of purpose. In the west we keep everyone safe and believe that all students are capable of achievement. We teach the value of hard work and expect our faculty and students to reach their highest potential.

At the Discovery Center we focus on building relationships with students and their families. Towards this end all our staff are trained to work with students dealing with any variety of needs. Our small size allows us to provide individual attention to students and build working connections. These connections allow us to impart academic knowledge as well as aid in the social and emotional development of each student. These relationships also provide a safe environment for all students to learn and grow.

We certainly hope you will join us on our journey this year as we foster intellectual growth and promote our pupils to become independent, responsible, and employable citizens. Our desire is that with our training in reading, mathematics, and with our development of the whole person we will enable our students to be successful in the 21st century.

Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway!
