The Charter School of Excellence (CSE) has partnered with Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) to support environments in which all students feel welcome, are accepted, and reach their maximum potential through a positive climate in which they learn and interact. It's through this partnership that CSE has decided to offer it's first "official" interscholastic sport at CSE and is sanctioned through Special Olympics PA Unified Champion Schools (UCS).
This is a fully-inclusive program which uses sports and youth leadership to successfully facilitate social inclusion and improve school climate. Students with disabilities come together as equal peers with students without disabilities to demonstrate and promote the values of acceptance, teamwork, and empowerment for all. During the 2023-24 school year, CSE will be participating in the winter sport of indoor Bocce. This sport, Bocce, will offer students opportunities to participate together meaningfully and safely. The team consists of 8 team members, and composed of a proportional number of players who are Special Olympic eligible and without disabilities. The season is quickly approaching and several activities will be underway.
Unified Champion Schools Program Components include Improving School Climate, Promoting Inclusion, Developing Leadership, and Increasing Awareness. CSE will be creating a Unified Club and begin engagement activities promoting inclusive practices. Our first engagement will be the Cool Schools Plunge on November 17th at the Erie Sports Center. Please be on the lookout for more information, and the CSE Bocce Team updates and meet schedule.
