highmark_Logo Grants and PartnershipsThe Highmark Healthy High 5 School Challenge grant program is designed to support schools in introducing programs that will foster healthier, more successful students. Through the School Challenge grant program, Highmark Healthy High 5 invites schools and school districts to submit innovative grant proposals within the topic areas of nutrition, physical activity, self-esteem and bullying prevention.

The Maritime Center has received a $10,000 grant to provide a school –wide wellness program through fitness, nutrition and our farm program, Cultivating Minds.”

Highmark-300x198 Grants and PartnershipsHealth, nutrition and fitness education will be learned on-site at a working farm that is part of an immersion experience. Students will experience contact with livestock, vegetable gardens, land conservation management practices, and health and wellness activities for a healthier lifestyle. The wellness activities include swimming, scuba lesson, and classroom exercise activities.

Other elements of the grant will include enhancing our daily fitness and nutrition experiences and adding to our after school intramural program with equipment and expanded activities.

Sportfishing & Aquatic Resource Education Grant Program

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) annually provide grant funds up to $5,000 per grantee for fishing and aquatic education programs.  We have been awarded this grant and will be providing a program called “Reel em In.” This is an opportunity for students to share the skills and knowledge they learn about boating and fishing with their parents.  This is win-win program as everyone learns new skills and increases their awareness of the resources and recreational activities of our area.

We have recently received a grant from the Workforce Investment Act to continue to provide an Industry Club for the 2010-211 school year. In 2009-201- school year our students won first place and we were named Regional Champs.

We have also received $2,700 to provide STEM programming. This grant will emphasis Science, Technology Engineering and Math across the curriculums and after school clubs.

ARTS ERIE and Artist in Resident

Many thanks to ARTS ERIE and our Artist in Resident, Clarabelle Van Niekerk. Ms Clari provided us with a school wide interdisciplinary arts program of dance, painting, poetry, theater and all around fun and creativity which culminated in a presentation to parents and friends.
